In today’s “This Is Some Bull $h!t news!” We are going to talk about a new commercial drink called ‘Drank”. What makes this worthy of my B.S. News you might be asking? Is it nasty? Is it too sweet? Is it over priced? So glad you asked.
Drank is a drink that is marketed and sold along the same lines as energy drinks, the difference is instead of a extreme energy drink this is a “extreme relaxation drink”. (Yes a relaxation drink go figure right? I guess guys jacked up on amp or what ever their drink/upper of choice is, will also be carrying around this downer.)
So now I know some of you guys are thinking “Ok… I still don’t see the big deal Tuche (or what ever your respective name for me is). Some time people need to relax and you can see the benifits of such a product. And if it’s on the market it must be safe right?” Riiiiight…let’s not get into that one this post. lol But no I’ll tell you my problem with it. Drank is model after a popular drug. Yep, I’m sure alot of you saw it coming.
Syrup is a drug originating from the southern region of the united states where I’m from as far back as the 80’s in places like Memphis, TN and Houston TX. It has grown in it’s popularity and use over the years and long term use often results in death. Other names for the drug are lean, purple stuff, sizurp(syrup), purple rain, styrofoam (reffering to the cup often used to drink/mix the drink),screw or DJ Screw (reffering to a Houston based DJ who poularized it),codine, promethazine, and yes you guessed it DRANK. It is used to get high, relax, slow things down and create a euphoric sensation.
Syrup is a mixed drink consisting of cough syrup (where the name comes from) and soft drinks such as sprite, coke, or mountain dew Though grape soda is a staple and possibly the most popular choice and where the trade mark refference color (purple) comes from. Jolly ranchers are also somtimes used.
Pomethazine is a ingrediant in cough syrup. it is used as a antihistamine it is a H1 receptor (expressed throughout the body, to be specific, in smooth muscles, on vascular endothelial cells, in the heart, and in the central nervous system.) It has a strong sedative effect and in some countries is prescribed for insomnia when benzodiazepines are contraindicated. It is available over the counter in the United Kingdom,Australia, Canada, Switzerland, and many other countries, but by prescription in the U.S.(brand names Phenergan, Promethegan, Romergan, Fargan, Farganesse, Prothiazine, Avomine, Atosil, Receptozine, Lergigan). and common side effects include:
- Confusion in the elderly
- Drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, more rarely vertigo
- Dry mouth
- Respiratory depression in patients under age of 2 and in those with severely compromised pulmonal function
- Chest Discomfort/Pressure. (typically in cases when patient is already taking medication for high blood pressure)
- Euphoria (very rare, except with high IV doses and/or coadministration with opioids/CNS depressants)
- Restless legs
- Short temper/Irritability
Extremely rare side effects include:
The drug was popularized in large part to a now deceased Houston based DJ named DJ Screw who pioneared a genre of music dubed “Screw music” (a sud genre of Hip-Hop); in the south a lot of the music in other regions was faster paced than many in houston were accustomed to and often many hade trouble grasping all that was said. So DJ screw who would often drink syrup while listening to songs slowed down extremly slow started makeing mix tapes of before mentioned typed of music slowed and with cuts repeating lines over to help grasp what was beiong said. This became know as “Screwed and Chopped” this became a popular style of music and even houston based slower paced music was also screwed and chopped, which pioneered a new genre of music. DJ Screw has since died of Syurp related complications.
Screw and much of houston and other area/region based music has heavily promoted Drank in songs “Purple Stuff” by Big Moe, Three Six Mafia (formerly Tripple Six Mafia)’s “Sippin On Some Syrup, and Former Roc-a-Fella recording artist Beanie Sigel’s “Purple Rain”, album covers, and shows. Many entertainers and fans alike have died from use of this drug including Hip-Hop legend Pimp C of U.G.K. (Under Ground Kings).
As long as you are to yourself partaking in this drug use only effectinf yourself I don’t have a problem it’s your life and your body. What I do have a problem with is the endorsement of a product who’s slogans, appearance, advertising, and packaging is intentionally put together to look and relate to a harmful, deadly, commonly illegaly abused drug that is popularlly used with youths. What message is this giving/ What effect is it having ? How do you personally feel about it?
This is one researchers findings on the “Extream Relaxation Drink”:
At this moment it’s 8:26 PM (PST), and just so happens tonight there’s a party tonight; I’m thinking of going…not sure yet. What I do know is I’m actually thirsty right now, so in front of me is this can of ice cold Drank. And yes that laptop is where I type all my articles. Time for a new computer huh
8:30 PM: I take my first sip. Delicious; tastes like grape, it’s lightly sweet, but has the feel of a soda; good aftertaste. As I take another sip to get better acquainted with the flavor, nothing so far is happening, as expected; there’s no instant jolt of anything; but within about 2-3 minutes I’m in a state of relaxation already. Funkadelic’s self titled album is playing in the background.
8:34 PM: I feel it a bit. My head feels comfortably light; I didn’t eat anything, so it’s absorbing in the pit of my stomach like any drink would, but I’m feeling the effect a little bit.
8:37 PM: My homie Erik calls me up, shooting the breeze about an upcoming video shoot (details on that in another post). As I’m talking to him, he starts laughing at how I sound like I just woke up. Nuff said; my eyes are getting heavy.
9:00 PM: I walked to the living room and handed my homie (for privacy reasons known as subject A) my can, told him to take a swig. He took a gulp, made a joke about Keenan and Kel (to which he corrected himself after remembering the reference was Orange soda, not the grape looking beverage this is.) I’ll check on his status later.
Still relaxed; my reaction time to things at this moment are slower, yet reflexes feel faster; don’t know how to explain that one. A highlight during this five minutes: I swatted a fly in midair despite being drowsy beyond comprehension.
9:05 pm: Subject B walks in my room, I hand him my can and tell him to take a phat swig from it, still being more than three fourths full (I love the size of this can by the way). Details on his status later.
9:06 PM: I decide to take it to the dome, and the can is now finished to the last drop. You know how you will get so tired that your head will start to bob and you keep having to wake yourself up? I’m doing that. Gonna take a walk outside and see what happens if I’m at least active. Will also check on subject A and B.
10:24 PM: It’s even more hitting me now. Went to Safeway with a friend; I found my speech pattern slowing down and on the verge of taking a nap while as a passenger in the car. A friend called asking if I was coming through to the party; no way tonight. Me driving in this condition would be beyond foolish.
Subject A, when asked on how he was feeling after about an hour of taking the drank, said he didn’t feel much of a difference; In considering that:
1. Subject A takes a lot of painkillers and drugs
2. Subject A only took a gulp; a higher dosage of Drank might have done something to him.
Same is true with subject B, who drank a little bit of product but when asked how he felt affirmed that although he didn’t feel too different, stated, “It tastes good though”.

2:05 AM: Just woke up from a “nap”. This stuff knocked me out cold, I slept like a baby. After typing this, crashed out again.
5:45 AM: Awake again. I think it’s left my system completely. Let me go on the record saying this stuff works. I woke up with no nasty side effects or a headache; just refreshed.
My summary of Drank is: I’ve never tasted or experienced anything like it. I do not recommend anyone drive with this beverage in your system.
And with that, I say goodbye, and don’t knock while I’m sleeping! :)
