Memphis TN. And our mayor and police swat caged us, surrounded us had snipers on the roof watching us, on horse back toward us, The KKK was guided in the cops backs turned to them while a literal city block of armed to the teeth swat, snipers, horse mounted cops, sheriffs, etc all faced the very peaceful protesters, photographers, and journalist. All of which were denied access to the clan to photograph, interview, or document. Not even news channels like fox and the like. Then aggressively threatened us with jail time if we didn’t disperse from the public area after the rally was over. More over earlier at a public park a block away another group who had the for sight no to go in to the caged are was forcibly removed from a public park where they were discussing strategy by a squad of swat. The KKK was not challenged, we were not allowed t argue stances, and several of our constitutional and civil rights were violated that day. The KKK said they had a great time and That the police did what they were supposed to and that they were treated great and will be returning soon. Welcome to the south.

These are some of the pictures I too at the Anti- Klan Rally a few weeks ago. I might post more later. Maybe some video. ^ That’s my photography blog by the way.

For all you dumb fucks that think this flag is racist

Out side the south people just don’t get it. But this flag does not = racism. It represents the south. Are there southern racist that dawn this flag? yes, but it is not because of racism. There are racist all over the use and you never see this flag with them out side the south. That is because is because they aren’t connected. A southern army used this flag which stood for the unified south.

A exchange about Naive American Costumes and my and most Natives I've met view on the issue.
Person 1: Everyone faces culture smears in the form of costumes… be it lederhosen or faux headdresses, no culture is exempt. It makes life a lot easier if you don’t let it bug you. Every culture is up against this, so either we ban them all, or we move on.
me: Racial costumes like the "china man" costume have been removed from stores and had production stopped. These items aren’t like a pair of jeans, there is religious meaning in some of these things, only certain genders and ages are supposed to wear some of these thing, the colors have meaning, color next to other colors have meanings, rather or not a person is married or not has meaning in respect to this stuff, A lot of these things have to be earned and it’s a complete slap in the face that this stuff is misused. Cultural appropriation and misuse in regards to native culture which is already struggling to exist is a major problem. Because of history Native culture in most tribes was almost completely wiped out in North America and Canada. Native culture was literally made illegal. Children were forcibly removed from their parent and never saw them a gain. They were placed in boarding schools, renamed euro names, and forbidden to practice their religion, culture, ceremonies, wear traditional clothing or speak their native tongues. The youth knew nothing of their ancestry or heritage. The only reason our cultures survived is because some of these children and not many at that, after reaching an age where they were released returned to their tribes before the remaining elders died. To this day the majority of natives can't speak their tribe’s language and desperately struggle to maintain who they are. To belittle all this especially when laws made these very things and it’s correct usage illegal is like spitting in our faces. Then the female costumes are marketed and made extremely sexualized , the same with photos of Native garb as the “sexy indian” or squaw Which is also a (derogatory term by the way) while you may take it lightly and people who wear these things for fun It’s a danger to us and the source of a huge issue in our communities. Data gathered by the U.S. Department of Justice indicates that Native American and Alaska Native women are more than 2.5 times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted than women in the U.S. in general. A recent study by the U.S. Department of Justice on violence against women concluded that 34.1percent of American Indian and Alaska Native women — or more than 1 in 3 — will be raped during their lifetime. The comparable figure for the U.S. as a whole is less than 1 in 5. I agree that every culture has these costumes but we are not talking about culture. "Indian" isn't a culture it is an ethnic group. Costumes made up of poorly made stereotypes. That are comprised with bits and pieces of completely different and none related native cultures to depict a characterture of what a Native American is is not only wrong it is insulting and racist. There are 562 tribes left in the US. All look and dress differently. If there was a costume called "Black Person" That was made of Timberland Boots, a oversized White tee, A glock, a corn rowed wig, a bling bling chain, and baggy pants with a elastic on the boxers so the pants look like they're sagging, it would be called racist. It's the exact same thing here. Years ago the china man costume consisted of a bowl hair cut wig, thick glasses (because Asians are near sighted) and buck teeth. This costume wasn't culture it was depicting a race using stereotypes and racism to do so. That is wrong and that is why it was banned. and yes all of these costumes should be banned.
How do I go about lobbying to have “Indian”, Native American, “Pocahontas” , “Indian Headdresses”, and “Indian Princess” costumes banned, and out of production?

I’m seriously pissed off about this bs and something needs to be done. If you know how I should go about it and the correct channels to go through, please contact me because I’m trying to get some ish done about this foolishness. Serious responses only please.

I don’t think anyone out there could quite comprehend what the picture means to me. I am a proud Squaw/former member of the YMCA Indian Princess Father-Daughter program. I entered the program at age four and turned five on my first campout.
The memories I have with my father and some other dads and daughters make me look back and think, “hey, my childhood was pretty damn fantastic.” Canoe trips, Kennedy Space Center, ACA, Circle F, Westgate River Ranch, etc. Anything from that program just makes me happy inside.
Anyway, this picture. Let me explain why it means so much. It encompasses the three of us dads and daughters wholly. Me, smiling broadly next to my dad. Him, standing proud as three-time chief for his final return to sachem-hood. Ryan, standing tall with a grin and a walkie-talkie. He always was the responsible one. His eldest daughter, Tati, looking around, observing as she always does. Mark, unsure but certain of his standing. Mia, with her dad and a smile on her face.
I love this picture.

My response. So what you are saying in that you didn’t take the time read the resources provided at that link. See if those quotes were in fact correct. Even though they did indeed come from ACTUAL Documents and BOOKS I’ve read Conquest of America myself and verified that this is in fact REAL. You saying that a written and work with citation is irrelevant because it was written in a forum where anyone can submit an answer is like me saying going to a city hall meeting as a civilian and telling the council the law they are passing is unconstitutional according to a reference I have here in this copy of the constitution highlighted in this paragraph because I am not a lawyer.

Since this recently submitted question is so fresh and innovative, I’ve decided to give it a little bit of my time.
(Among others) Why you cannot “appreciate” my culture:
When white people take it, they take the aspects of it that they like. These are the aspects people were mocked and hurt for sporting - but when white people choose to adopt this, it becomes correct to do, and “cool.’ This is suggesting that the opinion of a white person on the culture is somehow better than that of the original member of the culture. This upholds white supremacy.
White people do not fully appreciate the culture, ever. They only take the aspects they like. As a result of this, the nuances of the culture is lost, resulting in erasure of the culture. This is particularly problematic for cultures with rapidly diminishing amounts of people.
White people do not adopt the culture right, but frequently adopt a version that they see. This is not what the culture really is and propagates racist stereotypes. It frequently tells the story of a blatantly false caricature.
In adopting the aspects of the culture that you want, the depiction of the culture is frequently sexualized.
Simultaneously, when you take a part of the culture for your own, it erases the lived experiences of the group that upholds a custom and the struggles and hardship that the group went through. Thus, it diminishes the history of the group and causes for further erasure of experiences.
When customs translate into a Western context, very frequently a price tag is put on them - or they are commodified. This is a problem especially for spiritual practices that hold deep significance for those who practice it, and is blatantly disrespectful to these communities.
What is the collective factor that is wrong with this all? When you appropriate culture, you are treating the holder of the culture less important than your whim to use it. You are treating people of color and people who come from a non-Western cultural context as less than human.

*OK BUT THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO!
No. Because we still face the effects of this and you’re still not listening. We can engage in universal siblinghood when we don’t feel like we’re less legitimate people because of the colors of our skins and the *mystical* practices we engage in.
You wouldn’t discriminate someone born with a penis for dressing like a “girl” in any sense.
I couldn’t discriminate against white people who were appropriating culture even if I wanted to. You wanna know why? White people have privilege. We don’t have any rights except in our own spaces, sometimes not even then.
And as for the rest of that sentence? No, it’s not the same thing. There is no inherent insult in cross dressing. There is extreme inherent insult in cultural appropriation and it would be wise to see the difference. Do not appropriate the struggles of other groups of peoples to prove your point and dehumanize them.
But other people steal white culture all the time!!
Let’s start at the very beginning.
Not all people are equal. White people have privilege.
And when ‘we steal your culture,’ that’s actually not what we’re doing. Let’s have some examples, specifically about clothes, but also about pretty much anything else I can think of.
We’re trying to adjust to a world where whiteness is the norm. Because white people are able to tell the world what is ‘normal’ and they have defined, say, tshirts and jeans from  Hollister as ‘normal.’ We wear it to be normal, not to appropriate ‘white culture.’
We wear it because colonialism and other movements that caused for white people to rule us forced us to adhere to their standards for many generations. We wear it because we’ve been systematically forced to.
We wear it because we think it’s pretty - we wear it because the standards of beauty today are white.
We wear it because we will be harassed by white people and told to go home if we don’t.  It doesn’t matter if it is our home. The only way to be American or of the West is to dress in accordance to Western culture.
We wear it because we will be harassed by our own people if we don’t. We wear it to not be the worst kind of person there is - a FOB. We wear it because of our own internalized whiteness, internalized after many many centuries of it being forced onto us.
So to end this, nah, I’m not the racist one.
